Wisdom Tooth Removal in Singapore

The short answer

A wisdom tooth needs removing when it is causing problems: repeated infection, decay it is impossible to clean, damage to the tooth in front, or pressure and pain. Surgical removal at our Millenia Walk clinic is carried out by Dr Austin Chan under local anaesthetic, takes about 45 minutes per tooth, and is Medisave-claimable.

What happens

  1. Assessment with an X-ray, and a CBCT scan where the roots sit close to the nerve.

  2. Removal under local anaesthetic. The tooth is usually sectioned rather than pulled whole.

  3. Stitches, written aftercare instructions, and painkillers.

  4. A review about a week later to check healing and remove stitches if they are not dissolving.

Not every wisdom tooth has to come out. One that is fully through, in a normal position and cleanable can be left and monitored. The ones worth removing are the partially erupted ones — a flap of gum over a tooth you cannot brush properly is a recurring infection waiting to happen, and it puts the healthy molar in front at risk of decay you cannot restore.

Expect three to five days of swelling and soreness, worst on the second day. Plan it for a Thursday or Friday if you would rather not take working days off.

Questions

Is wisdom tooth removal Medisave claimable?

Yes. Surgical removal of a wisdom tooth is a claimable surgical procedure, subject to Ministry of Health limits. Bring your NRIC and we will process the claim.

Do I need to be put to sleep?

No. It is done under local anaesthetic in the clinic. You are awake but the area is fully numb.

How long is the recovery?

Swelling peaks around day two and settles over three to five days. Soft food, no smoking, no vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours.

Should I remove wisdom teeth that are not hurting?

Not automatically. If it is fully erupted, cleanable and not damaging anything, monitoring is reasonable. We will show you the X-ray and explain which category yours falls into.
