Gums that bleed when you brush are inflamed, and inflammation is not normal. Early gum disease is reversible with a proper clean and better technique at home. Once it has destroyed bone around the teeth it can be halted and maintained but not reversed, which is why the point at which you come in matters.

What happens
Full assessment: pocket depths measured around every tooth, bleeding points recorded, X-rays to see the bone level.
Deep cleaning below the gum line, quadrant by quadrant, with local anaesthetic where needed.
Technique coaching — which is most of the outcome. Interdental brushes, not just floss.
Re-measurement after six to eight weeks to see what actually improved, then a maintenance interval of three to six months.
The reason we chart pockets rather than just scale and send you away is that it produces a number to compare against later. Without a baseline, neither of us can tell whether the gums are improving or slowly getting worse.
Gum disease is also associated with cardiovascular disease and with poorer diabetic control, and it runs in families. If you have a family history of losing teeth, say so — it changes how closely we monitor.

Questions
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Almost always plaque-driven inflammation at the gum margin. Healthy gums do not bleed. Brushing harder is not the answer; cleaning between the teeth usually is.
Is gum disease reversible?
Gingivitis — inflammation without bone loss — is fully reversible. Periodontitis, where bone has been lost, can be stabilised and maintained but the lost bone does not come back.
Does deep cleaning hurt?
It is done with local anaesthetic where the pockets are deep. Teeth can be sensitive for a week or two afterwards, and gums may look as though they have shrunk — that is inflammation resolving.
